It’s a question as old as the church and as urgent as ever: “how should Christians engage in public life?” Many Christians default to withdrawal on one hand or to culture warring out of fear and self-preservation on the other. So, how can we practically proclaim the Gospel and live it out in the arena of politics as we head into the 2020 election season?
In this interview on Dr. Mark Eckel’s radio program (if you missed his interview in Episode #112, you need to hear it! It’s packed with practical information and ideas about translating Biblical truth to a secular culture), Josh answers theses questions and explains why he believes engagement in public life is a part of Christian discipleship just like living out the gospel at work, at school, etc. (Matt. 28:16-20). And, Josh doesn’t stop at the theoretical level. He goes on to explain how the The Daniel Initiative is practically equipping the church to faithfully but effectively engage public life in Indiana.
Key Takeaways:
- The connection between the Great Commission and the church’s witness in the public square.
- The danger of consciously or subconsciously putting one’s socio-political tribe (conservative Republican/liberal Democrat) above one’s identity as a Christ-follower.
- Why 2020 will complicate gospel-centered citizenship.
- An explanation of the 3 main projects of The Daniel Initiative and what they are designed to accomplish.
- Why we need to revisit the goal of Christian citizenship in the United States, and Josh’s thoughts on what the new goal should be.
