Just about everything has changed in the last 2-3 weeks, and this includes the needs of our communities and the best strategies to meet those needs. In this episode , we talked with Jay Height from Shepherd Community Center on the Near Eastside of Indy about meeting community needs during the COVID-19 crisis. Jay shares several ways his church and ministry are serving their neighbors and gives practical ideas for other churches to consider. Also, Jay encourages churches to do everything they can to be the hands and feet of Jesus during this crisis.

Here are the five key ways Shepherd Community Church is serving during the COVID-19 crisis:

  1. Food. The need for food is severe, and donations of food are drying up. He also explains the practical measures necessary to distribute food during this time.
  2. Medical needs. Among other efforts, Shepherd is distributing iPads to assist with tele-health appointments.
  3. E-learning. Shepherd also runs a school, which has pivoted to e-learning.
  4. Financial assistance. Shepherd is spreading awareness about the state order prohibiting evictions during the crisis and assisting with other financial needs.
  5. Connecting while distancing. Jay and his staff are working on connecting by phone with the families they serve as well as with neighbors on the Near East side.
