Due to COVID-19 closures and other complications, many organizations and individuals are reconsidering, well, everything. Businesses are considering permanent remote work arrangements, churches are experimenting with “phygital” gatherings and many families are spending more time together than they have in years. All of this has led many individuals to revisit that scary question, “What is the purpose of my life?” In sum, right now is the perfect time to discover (or rediscover) and pursue your destiny–God’s purpose for you on the planet.

In this sermon, I thought I would mix things up a bit and set out a roadmap for completely whiffing at God’s purpose for your brief time on the planet. So, if you want to epically fail and have little to no impact in your city, state and nation, follow these tried and true steps drawn from the remarkable story of Esther (who epically failed at dodging her destiny):

  1. Get Distracted
  2. Confuse Destiny with Deity
  3. Don’t Make a Decision
  4. Treat it Like a Destination

Key Takeaways:

  • The key question: Given my skills, opportunities, desires, and resources, how can I best serve God right now?
  • Why I still have PTSD from elementary school dodgeball.
  • The fascinating concept of personal and national destiny and Abraham Lincoln’s thoughts on the topic in his Second Inaugural Address.
  • Of course, we should not duck our destiny. We should redeem the time and live every day to the fullest so that one day Jesus will say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
