2020 is apparently determined to cement its legacy as a complex and frustrating year. A new spike in COVID-19 cases, new lockdowns or restrictions to address those spikes and the uncertainty of the election results are the most recent headlines. And, like many of you, I find myself frustrated and ready to move on from these crazy hamster wheel of a year.

With that in mind, I attended a pastor’s fellowship last week and was blessed when the group sang Martin Luther’s powerful song, “A Mighty Fortress is our God.” Something about a group of church leaders belting out this historic song about the God of the ages in the midst of the a pandemic stirred my soul. And I re-read Psalm 46, which inspired the words of the hymn.

Here is a sermon based on that incredible text, Psalm 46. I hope it is an encouragement to you in this time of frustration and complexity.

Key Points:

  1. Mission, not Normal
  2. Disruption, not Interruption
  3. Resilient, not Wrecked

Key Takeaways:

  • Why does this Psalm refer to the God of Jacob? Here’s why.
  • Normal – Disruption x Anxiety = Failure
  • Mission + Disruption x Resilience = Faithfulness
  • Be like duct tape. STICK.
