One of the key problems in American society is, of course, the drug addiction crisis. This problem affects Americans from the holler to the high rise, has impacted most if not all of our lives and ministries and has intensified in 2020. The drug crisis is also one of the “Big 3” mentioned by Governor Holcomb of Indiana when I asked him how churches could impact community problems.

Over the last few months, we have been focused on the election, another round of COVID-19 lockdowns and key U.S. Supreme Court cases. But we should not lose sight of the drug problem despite the urgencies of the pandemic and 2020. We recently had the opportunity to put together a breakout session at Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill’s annual drug abuse symposium, and four ministries presented on their important and remarkable work in this space.

In this episode, I interviewed Phil Gabriel, the Executive Director of Trinity Life Ministry near Lafayette, Indiana (and one of the presenters at the symposium), to discuss Trinity Life’s comprehensive and Biblical approach to addiction recovery for men. Some highlights:

  • Trinity Life’s strategic and (in my opinion) providential history and location.
  • The ministry’s ongoing partnership with government officials.
  • My reflections on the incredible testimonies shared by men in the program (I spoke at a chapel and heard these first-hand).
  • A step-by-step review of Trinity Life’s comprehensive, year-long program for men.
  • How local churches can effectively engage the drug crisis.
  • The importance of ministering to the families of those wrestling with addiction.
  • Phil’s remarkable conversation with a medical professional at the Mayo clinic about strategies for impacting the drug crisis!
