The Russian invasion of Ukraine shocked the world, ended an extended period of peace among European nations, and shattered the vision of a 21st century without competing military alliances and attempted conquest. Given these momentous geopolitical events, I find it easy to overlook the terrible effect of war on individuals, families and ministries. Because of that, I asked Suzy Roth, the Executive Director from Hands of Hope (an organization in Indiana that partners with several ministries in Ukraine), about the conditions on the ground and how to pray for and support several specific ministries in the war zone.

Key Takeaways:

  • The connection between central Indiana and Ukraine. Indianapolis has one of the largest Ukrainian populations in the U.S. (approximately 19,000), and a number of ministries that serve in Ukraine are based in the circle city.
  • Suzy Roth, who leads Hands of Hope, explains how God led her (and Hands of Hope) to minister in Ukraine and the specifics of the Dignity Home and Romaniv.
  • The ministry of Mission to Ukraine and their efforts to provide support for pregnant women and those with special needs.
  • The work of Wide Awake International, another ministry that serves vulnerable children and families.
  • Information about Last Bell Ministries, which serves orphans and orphan-parented families.
  • The region of Ukraine where these ministries operate, and how the war is impacting their efforts.
  • How these ministries are serving their communities despite dwindling supplies and the danger of shelling and air attacks.
  • A list of 20 key ministries in Ukraine vetted by the National Christian Foundation.
  • A remarkable excerpt from the C.S. Lewis essay, “Learning in War-Time” and it’s application to us today.
  • An important reminder that the need in Ukraine will continue long after the fighting stops.
