Brenda McElroy was preparing to enjoy some joyful, quiet (at least in the sense of private rather than public life; grandkids are not exactly quiet!) years with her husband and extended family. That is, until God tapped her on the shoulder and called her to run for City Commission.
Brenda, who is an incredibly insightful and mature Christian (just listen to the episode!), had no previous experience in politics. Yet, she put together a grass-roots campaign and won a seat on her City Commission!
We often talk about strategic community impact or making a significant difference in the life of our cities. Well, becoming a City Commissioner is one surefire way to do that!
In this interview, we discuss:
- Her fascinating call to public life. By the way, Brenda partially “blames” Bold Church Initiative for this!
- How the secular admonition to Christians to “not be a hypocrite” is actually good advice.
- How her concern for her community flowed over into a concern for/interest in the political arena.
- Her methods for putting together a successful campaign and what she intends to do in office.
- Her secret for peace during election night (and any trial or season of uncertainty).
- Her billboard statement: “Do the next thing.” Love this! She explained, “We encounter God’s guidance as we engage in our current circumstances.”
