What can you do to end abortion in your lifetime? What can you do to protect the dignity of the disabled and the elderly? Though it is certainly important to press for a reversal of Roe v. Wade and its supporting cases and for reform at the state level, we may not be able to gavel or vote away this problem for some time. So, everyday Christians should focus on doing the hard work of changing hearts and minds (of being a “Lifeguard”) in their sphere of influence. In this sermon on the sanctity of life, I emphasized four points designed to impact how we think and what we do in this important area.
#1 It’s All about Self (personal autonomy is at the foundation of Roe and has to be addressed moving forward).
#2 It Starts with Sex (this insight may be the most brilliant you have ever heard! Just call me Sherlock; the Church’ silence about sexual ethics is deafening).
#3 It’s our Story (the Christian church has historically protected the innocent; it’s time to own that story).
#4 It’s Time to Serve (the pregnancy care center movement has proven a Biblical concept, and the Church can learn from that movement).
Great quote: “The early Christians rejoiced when they were deemed worthy to suffer for what they believed. In those days the Church was not merely a thermometer that recorded the ideas and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed the mores of society.” ― Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from the Birmingham Jail
