The Commonwealth of Kentucky has recently become a standout state for standing up for religious liberty and the common good.
For example, the Kentucky legislature, under the leadership of Governor Matt Bevin, has passed laws restricting abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy, supporting charter schools, supporting Bible electives and abstinence education in public schools, reforming foster care and protecting religious liberty for public school students.
In this episode, I interview Richard Nelson, the founder and director of the Commonwealth Policy Center and one of the key catalysts of the developments described above. Richard is a frequent commentator in key newspapers and media outlets in Kentucky, routinely equips Christians to enter public life and leads a grass-roots movements of churches and Christians in impacting Kentucky.
Richard is remarkably effective at what he does, but he is also remarkably gracious and Gospel-centered in his engagement in the public square. In this interview, we discuss the following:
- His call to public life
- How he champions civility despite engaging in hot-button issues (Kentucky has become a flashpoint for religious liberty issues–think Kim Davis, the Hands on Originals case, etc.)
- What he wishes every pastor and lay Christian knew about the public square
- How he stays focused on the Gospel while addressing policy issues as diverse and controversial as life, human sexuality, gambling, foster care, etc.
- Where he sees Christian cultural engagement going in the next decade
Richard routinely blogs and produces radio segments on key issues. You can follow these on CPC’s website: http://www.commonwealthpolicycenter.org/.
