During a recent conversation with a U.S. Senator, I asked this question, “How can churches help during this crisis?” I was surprised by his response. Instead of pointing out food needs, low blood reserves, or healthcare concerns, he pointed out something much more, well, spiritual. He stated that churches should focus on combating loneliness.

In this episode, I wanted to take a break from heavy/weighty issues and celebrate the great work my church and many other churches have been doing to combat loneliness and build community during the COVID-19 crisis. In this episode, I interviewed Pastor Mike Johnson, Missy Johnson and Carissa Hershberger (my wife and teammate) from Cornerstone Baptist Church in Hanover, Indiana. Pastor Johnson and Missy Johnson have been in ministry for almost 40 years and have ministered from Maryland to California and many places in between. When it comes to caring for people and doing life together (while apart), I don’t know anyone that does it better.

In sum, this episode is designed to provide helpful ideas; but, I also hope it encourages and affirms the great work you and your church have been doing in providing community during uncertain and lonely times. No piece of legislation, no multi-billion dollar bailout and no government proclamation can give people hope and a sense of belonging. I am thankful that a U.S. Senator recognized this and that churches all over the country have been proving how vital–er–essential they are in combating loneliness during this crisis.
